覇王 (Haou) Translation
I've seen various translations of this word. In one FFX12 translation it's "tyrant king" and in this wiki, it's "heavenly king" (or sometimes "heavenly ruler"). The meaning of 覇 is "supremacy, leadership." But then the literal translation becomes "supreme king" which sounds superflous (isn't a king supreme by definition? ^_- ). Most Japanese websites seem to translate the compound as just "king," but admittedly that seems a little plain, and doesn't make Reshaul/Raithwall sound stronger than the emperor, which he should be since he united all the lands. "Heavenly king" does sound better than tyrant king (which makes him sound evil), but it does seem like an embellishment. What do others think?

of everything you mentioned, I still like the heavenly king that I used first, however, if you or others here have a better idea, I'm open to change it. supreme and tyrant just didnt fit well. I picked heavenly because of the high priests involvement with the king and one of his treasures.
Ah, that's pretty good reasoning sigelx. Since you mentioned high priests, how about "high king?" wikipedia -quartet4

- I was wondering about all the weapons, spells, items, and other miscellaneous stuff. Is the romanji really necessary? Because I have a lot of information about each individual items, but they just don't spread across the pages since too much informations.
- What I meant was, doesn't readers just want to print off and compare whats on the screen? Which is the exact names that we posted? why would they want romajis?
破魔石 (Hamaseki) => Ideas for translating this?

Ah, all right. Roll with that, then. - Shiro
~ Cheesemeister:
- Perhaps we can divy up the gratuitously abundant NPC text by town...
- Shiro - We will be, and by progress in the game and area within that town, too. Rabanastre, especially...
- Should we publish some of our content on GameFAQs proper and include the URL?
- Lloyd - I've got a faq that im uploading into GameFAQs for monsters, I'll put the wiki address in it as well as promote the page on my faq, it should be in by the next update I hope.
- Hi. I'm new here. Let's be friends. :)
- I think "Tyrant King" is a good translation of "覇王". However, in English, we'd probably give him a moniker like Raithwall the Terrible. Maybe that's worth thinking about.
- A quick question: we're aiming for consistency with American names, right? (As opposed to direct translation. For instance, "Cactuar" is preferabale to "Saboten" if we are.) If that's the case, are FF7, 8, 9 and 10 names (i.e. Malboro, Coeurl, Mind Flayer) preferable to those in, say, FF Tactics (Morbol, Cuar, Mindflare)? FFT had a hideous translation; it wasn't uncommon for proper names to be romanized more than one way.

- Yes, we DEFINITELY want to use the standard translations from other FFs from the modern era (~FF9 on, off course). Thanks for the clean-up on the monster list and elsewhere.
- As far as a possible translation for "覇王", I'm partial to "Overlord Raithwall" myself. A postfix like you suggested seems feasible; however, there is the translation of pesky items like 覇王の剣 to worry about, too. "Tyrant King Sword"? "Overlord's Sword"?

- Has anyone transcribed the monster data in the Clan Report yet? If not, I'd be willing to start. Where does it go?
- Just out of curiosity, has anyone looked into the origins of the new Espers' names? I know that Cuchulainn is an Irish folk hero, and a quick Google search reveals that Adrammelech was the Sumerian god of the sun. Do Mateus, Famfrit, et. al. have similar histories?

*as for the translation of 覇王 and the sword, until we decide for sure I'll keep as is in the main text so as not to confuse anyone reading the story. After recieving "help" on the main text for when Ashe meets the Ocuria, I have decided that it would probably be best for me to finish up the rest of the main text myself and we can decide on the few names that are being discussed together. I shouldn't take too much more time to get it done anyway. I give myself one week to get to the end.
- Ikari
- Whenever a final translation on 覇王 is settled on, as far as the items go a name like "Sword of the <覇王>" might flow better than "<覇王>'s Sword". Though that depends largely on what translation it ends up with.
